Avoid Dental Implant Failure with These Tips

Dental implants are considered the gold standard of tooth replacement because they’re one of the most reliable solutions, boasting a success rate of up to 95%. Even so, it’s natural to have some concerns about the possibility of implant failure. The good news is that with a few simple habits, you can dramatically lower your risk and keep your new smile healthy for years to come. Read on to learn four ways you can protect your investment!

Maintain Excellent Oral Hygiene

Peri-implantitis (a form of gum disease) is one of the leading threats to dental implants. When the gums become infected, the tissues supporting your implants can be weakened, increasing the risk of failure. That’s why keeping up with daily oral hygiene is crucial.

Be sure to brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss daily. Pay special attention to the areas around your implants to remove harmful plaque buildup. You may also want to consider upgrading to an electric toothbrush, which has been shown to be more effective than manual brushing at cleaning hard-to-reach areas and reducing plaque levels.

Avoid Biting Hard Objects

While dental implants are extremely durable, they aren’t indestructible. Biting down on hard objects can put too much force on the implant posts, leading to cracks, chips, or loosening over time.

Be mindful of what you eat and avoid chewing ice, hard candies, and other tough foods. Additionally, try to break any habits like biting your nails or chewing on pens, both of which can cause unnecessary strain on your implants.

Use a Nightguard to Protect Against Teeth Grinding

Bruxism, also known as chronic teeth grinding, is another potential risk to your implants. Many people grind or clench their teeth without even realizing it, often while they sleep. Over time, the constant pressure can damage the implant, surrounding bone, and even the restorations attached to it.

If you’re prone to bruxism (or if you experience symptoms like morning headaches or jaw soreness), ask your dentist about a custom nightguard. This protective device fits comfortably over your teeth and provides a cushion against the forces of grinding, helping to safeguard both your implants and natural teeth.

Keep Up with Regular Dental Checkups

It’s incredibly important to visit your dentist at least twice a year for routine checkups and cleanings, even if your dental implants feel fine. During these appointments, your dentist will thoroughly examine your implants, gums, and jawbone to catch any early signs of trouble.

If issues are detected early, they can often be treated quickly and effectively, minimizing the risk of implant failure. Plus, professional cleanings will help remove plaque and tartar buildup that can lead to infections around your implants.
